Principal Data Engineer in Music Machine Learning/Personalization Experience


Tens of millions of customers, billions of hours of listening time per year. The scale of Amazon Music is huge, and will continue to grow rapidly as we deepen our music experience, and add more forms of audio-based entertainment like podcasts, audiobooks, and live shows. We are seeking a Principal Data Engineer to imagine, design, and deliver the next generation of data infrastructure that helps us deliver a delightful customer experience for one of the most prominent music services in the world.

The Music Machine Learning/Personalization Experience team is responsible for delivering a customer experience that optimally meets the customer’s tastes. We build recommenders to dynamically select and rank content for playlists like My Discovery Mix, and orchestrate the composition and ranking of playlists, stations, and other forms of entertainment for individual experiences like the Home page. We continuously innovate on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to improve the customer experience, and we own several platforms for optimization at scale across experiences on desktops, tablets, mobile devices, TVs, and our Echo devices.

Our platforms vend features and models, and orchestrate optimization for Amazon Music worldwide. That is tends of millions active daily customers listening to music per day. We serve these customers through our orchestration integrations with clients across mobile, web, desktop, Echo devices, and FireTV.

As a Principal Engineer, you will:

• Serve as a technical lead on our most demanding, cross-functional projects on data infrastructure for ML optimization.
• Ensure the quality of architecture and design of data infrastructure, monitoring for data quality.
• Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.
• Fully and completely understand system interdependencies and limitations.
• Possess expert knowledge in testing and test-driven design, performance, scalability, enterprise data infrastructures, and data engineering best practices.
• Leverage knowledge of internal and industry prior art in design decisions.
• Effectively research and benchmark Amazon Music data technology against other competing systems in the industry.
• Contribute intellectual property through patents.
• Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members
