Internship Quantum Computing and Operations Research (w/m/d) in Berlin
Deutsche Bahn AG

Jobbeschreibung
The internship will be within the project “Digitale Schiene Deutschland” which is developing the digital processes and algorithms for the future Digital Rail for DB Netz in a highly collaborative, innovative and agile environment. A key part of this project is to develop a Capacity and Traffic Management System (CTMS) that fully automates control and dispatch on trains using novel approaches from a range of fields including operations research (OR), reinforcement learning and quantum computing. The CTMS team will be starting an exploratory study of quantum computing for optimizing train scheduling using either a QUBO or Ising spin-glass model and then evaluating the model on quantum devices. We may also investigate using our existing mixed integer model in order to provide pricing information for the quantum model. Depending on interest, there is also an ongoing work to integrate our OR model with the reinforcement learning approach also used by our team. For this, we need to integrate the tensor-based simulation environment used for the reinforcement learning into the OR model so as to make our solutions compatible. For this, we are looking for you for an internship of at least 3 (up to 6) months for DB Netz AG in Berlin. Your tasks: • Use quantum frameworks (Qiskit, PyQUBO) to formulate an Ising spin-glass model • Evaluate sample runs on a quantum device or on a quantum Monte Carlo simulator and analyze the results • Integrate proof-of-concept project with existing mixed-integer model • Work independently in an agile development process and learn from the team and external partners Dein Profil: • You are studying in the field of mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, transport or a comparable field of study • You have basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, computational complexity theory, linear algebra or discrete mathematics • You have worked with some of the following: Hamiltonians, unitary matrices, eigenvalues, piecewise linear functions • You have experience with a programming language such as Python or C++ • Your ability to work in a team and your good organizational skills, as well as your good knowledge of English round off your profile
