Intern/ Working Student/ Thesis Student (f/m/d): Scientific Research in Computational Geometry in Walldorf

Jobbeschreibung

SAP started in 1972 as a team of five colleagues with a desire to do something new. Together, they changed enterprise software and reinvented how business was done. Today, as a market leader in enterprise application software, we remain true to our roots. That’s why we engineer solutions to fuel innovation, foster equality and spread opportunity for our employees and customers across borders and cultures.

SAP values the entrepreneurial spirit, fostering creativity and building lasting relationships with our employees. We know that a diverse and inclusive workforce keeps us competitive and provides opportunities for all. We believe that together we can transform industries, grow economics, lift up societies and sustain our environment. Because it’s the best-run businesses that make the world run better and improve people’s lives.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Spatial Team is responsible for the development of HANA's spatial component. Our engine stores and processes geospatial data and enables our customers to use HANA as an enterprise geodatabase in conjunction with their Esri and Open Source GIS landscapes.
We are a team of passionate C++ developers caring about location, efficient algorithms and high quality.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for someone to work with us on developing an algorithm for splitting line segments at approximate intersection points. Ideally, we can make it work both in planar and spherical geometry.

The problem in a nutshell: Given a set of line segments and a way to compute approximate intersection points, can we subdivide the segments along the intersection points such that the new segments form a planar graph? Note that we can compute exact intersection points, but we must round to store them, and this rounding can introduce new intersections. So we rather do the rounding right in the beginning. There is a known solution using grids in the plane (Snap Rounding), but we don’t think it can be generalized to the sphere, and we’re looking for something else.
Intuitive reasoning in (computational) geometry can quickly lead to wrong conclusions, so we want this to be backed up by rigorous formal mathematics. Consequently, we would like you to be reasonably familiar with basic concepts of algebraic/differential geometry, and to have some experience in working with formal proofs. Depending on the timing, you might end up writing some code, but more likely you’ll be writing on paper or in LaTeX.

You’ll not work alone, and we’re not starting from scratch.

Are you up for that challenge?

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Student (f/m/d) at a university or a university of applied sciences
  • Preferred fields of study: Mathematics or Computer Science
  • Computer skills: Windows, LaTeX, Git
  • Language skills: fluent in English, German as a plus
  • Familiarity with algebraic/differential and computational geometry.
  • Experience with formal reasoning and writing proofs.
  • Soft skills: team player, creative, explorative

Your set of application documents should contain a cover letter, a resume in table form, school leaving certificates, certificate of enrollment, current university transcript of records, copies of any academic degrees already earned, and if available, references from former employers (including internships). Please also describe your experience and skills in foreign languages and computer programs / programming languages.
